Are you anticipating the road bumps ahead?
Are you anticipating the road bumps ahead and proactively making the maneuvers you need to achieve your goals?
Several years ago, I got my motorcycle license.
During the course one of the things that is burned into your memory is looking ahead 2-seconds, 4-seconds or 12-seconds. What does that exactly mean?
• 2-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: This is a minimum when conditions are ideal and you are paying close attention ahead.
• 4-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: This helps you react properly to conditions, whether approaching an intersection, rounding a curve, or following another vehicle.
• 12-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Evaluate areas it would take you that long to reach. The idea is to have a big picture of the entire environment and to be aware of the overall traffic flow
How does this apply to us day to day?
80% of us give up our New Year Resolution by February.*
That indicates to me that most of us are living with a view of 2-seconds…maybe 4 if we’re lucky.
And if we’re doing that in our business?
The likelihood of achieving that end of year revenue goal just got smaller.
Consider this:
• 2-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝: Paying attention to what’s right in front of you, when everything is ideal.
• 4-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝: Paying attention to just what’s up ahead, allowing you to react with a sense of urgency…limited view, looking at the next client meeting, the next partnership deal, or the next due date at work
• 12-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝: Being intentional every single day, prioritizing and proactively taking actions that aligned with your goals for the year.
If you were operating with a 12-second view, what would be different in your business?
The likelihood is you’ll be not only achieving that goal but exceeding it.
